Alexander Gilder

Associate Professor of International Law and Security, University of Reading

One of the few international lawyers working in the peacekeeping space, his research is necessarily interdisciplinary, drawing on perspectives from law, peace and conflict studies, and international relations. Alex investigates various aspects of peace operations including stabilization, counter-terrorism, the rule of law, the protection of civilians, and security sector reform.

In his book, Stabilization and Human Security in UN Peace Operations (Routledge 2022), Alex examined whether stabilization mandates pursued human security. You can hear more about this research on the Humans of Security podcast or on YouTube.

He has experience generating impact and leading on knowledge exchange through his consultancy engagements. For example, he has consulted for the NATO HQ Allied Rapid Reaction Corps, has been part of a Critical Group on UK Defence invited by the Ministry of Defence to contribute to shaping the next Defence Command Paper, and and has been engaged as an Expert by the European Commission.
